On 8 May Nilufer Maharramova, 20 year-old, committed suicide supposedly following pressure over her critical blog posts, reports contact.az. According to Yeni Musavat newspaper, Maharramova had reportedly been subject to ill-treatment at the Mingechevir police depatment. It is also noted that the girl had problems with her family over her political beliefs.
Chief of Mingechevir Police Department Alasgar Badalov refuted the information about the police pressure on Maharramova. He said he even did not know about her being a blogger, writes Azadliq newspaper.
In its statement regarding the matter, the Prosecutor General’s Office denied the reports that prior to her death Maharramova had been summoned to the police office and subjected to pressure there. “Preliminary investigations show that she had thrown herself over the balcony of her apartment. However her suicide has been politicized by certain media outlets” reads the statement.
