The attorneys for youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev and APFP youth member Jabbar Savalanli have encountered government pressures, they informed IRFS today.
Hajiyev has been charged with evading military service; Savalanli for drug possession, but it is widely thought that both were arrested for their activity on social networking sites and their support of the protests in March and April. Journalist Eynulla Fatullayev is also in prison under charges of drug possession.
Alayif Hasanov, Hajiyev’s representative says that it is not unusual for him to face such challenges in his work defending youth activists and representatives of the opposition.
“My wife, Manzar Aslanova, was a doctor at Zardab District Central Hospital for 15 years. A while ago her salary was cut in half, and recently, she was fired without any justification. In addition, my son was expelled from school. I think this all is related to my professional activity,” said the lawyer.
Seeking comment from Zardab District Central Hospital, IRFS telephoned the head doctor, but the reporters were unable to find anyone to comment. The head doctor Ruslan Nematov was attending an event, and was not at the hospital.
Savalanli’s attorney Anar Gasimov told IRFS about an incident in front of the court building, after the youth activist’s May 4 sentencing, where he was threatened by Deputy Chief of Sumgayit City Police Office Azar Jahangirov.
A confrontation broke out between youth activists and police after Savalanli was handed a prison sentence. In front of all the journalists present, Jahangirov accused me of causing the unrest. He told me: ‘You have arranged all this, you are working agaisnt the state, and we already have prepared evdience to discredit you.’ I have appealed to the Interior Ministry, General Prosecutor’s Office and Bar of Lawyers,” said Gasimov.
