The Khazar district court of Baku rejected a complaint of the lawyer of the activist of the Party of People’s Front of Azerbaijan (PPFA) Agil Gumbatov.
The complaint was against a decision of the Khazar prosecutor’s office which refused to initiate a criminal case due to tortures of the activist in the local police after his arrest.
The court rejected the activist’s complaint of tortures.
According to lawyer Neymat Kerimli, the defense will appeal against the court’s decision.
Gumbatov was detained on August 11 this year. He is charged under Article 126.2.4 (causing serious damage to health in a dangerous way from hooligan motives) of the Criminal Code which provides for a penalty of 6 to 11 years of imprisonment.
He is charged with stabbing a resident of the settlement of Zira, Yamen Mammadov.
However, according to human rights activists, the provocation was committed against Gumbatov and the real reason for the activist’s arrest was his criticism of the country’s leadership on social networks.
A year ago, after a critical statement against the authorities on the Internet, Gumbatov was imprisoned in a mental hospital.
