Court sentenced PFPA activist to 10 years of imprisonment

At the Baku Court of Grave Crimes on November 15 in the trial of PPFA activist Agil Humbatov, the sentence was announced today. The court imprisoned him for 10 years on the charge of armed assault.

Gumbatov denied the charge as saying that a provocation was arranged against him, and he did not attack anyone. The oppositionist considered the criminal case as a “revenge” for his criticism of the Azerbaijani leadership.

The defense did not agree with the verdict and is going to appeal it in the court of appeals.

It should be recalled that Humbatov was detained on 11 August this year and charged under Art. 126.2.4 (causing grievous harm to health, dangerously from hooliganism motives) of the Criminal Code which provides for 6 to 11 years of imprisonment.

In particular, Gumbatov was accused of stabbing Yemen Mamedov, a resident of Zirya settlement.

However, human rights activists believe that a provocation was committed against Gumbatov, and the real reason for the activist’s arrest was his criticism of the country’s leadership in social networks.

A year ago Humbatov was imprisoned in a mental hospital after criticizing the authorities on the Internet.
