Gender activist Gulnara Mehdiyeva held a single protest action on Tuesday in connection with the rape of a minor Sanay Gahramanli.
Mehdiyeva raised a poster with the slogan: “Why is a minor rapist free?”
In her opinion, the country’s leadership must intervene and ensure the punishment of the culprit, otherwise it will be a shield for the criminal. “As long as this person is free, we are all in danger,” Mehdiyeva said online via Facebook. Police officers took away the poster from the activist and took away in an unknown direction.
The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs told Turan that Mehdiyeva was not detained. She was removed from the territory and released.
Last week, the victim’s mother, the writer Zumrud Yagmur, accused her nephew of this crime, who allegedly drugged the victim. Yagmur said that the investigation did not conduct a real investigation to shield the rapist. Yagmur’s speech caused a resonance in social networks, and the activists demanded an objective investigation from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
The victim’s father is a well-known politician, member of the Presidium of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Fuad Gahramanli.
Yesterday, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that the criminal case in connection with this case, initiated in the Yasamal District Prosecutor’s Office under the Article 149.2.3 of the Criminal Code is taken under the personal control of the Prosecutor General. The continuation of the investigation was entrusted to the Investigation Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office. The necessary investigative measures are being taken.
