BAKHTIYAR HAJIYEV TRANSFERRED TO A NEW PRISON

Youth blogger and former political candidate Bakhtiyar Hajiyev has been transferred to prison #14, reported Rail Abbasov, the chairman of the defense committee for youth activists’ rights to IRFS today.

According to Abbasov, Hajiyev has been transferred to the Penitentiary Service’s Treatment Facility due to health problems: “I intended to meet with Bakhtiyar this morning, but I was told that he had already been transferred.”
He also announced that the Supreme Court will hold a hearing on Hajiyev’s cassation appeal on December 6th, at 11:00 am. Judge Imran Hajigayibov will oversee the hearing.
The criminal case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was launched at the end of January, 2011, at which point he signed a statement of commitment not to leave Ganja (a city in north Azerbaijan). At the end of February, his pre-trial detention was replaced with release under police bail.
Ganja City Court sentenced youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev to 2 years in jail on May 18, 2011, charging him with evasion of military service. It is widely thought that Hajiyev was arrested for his activity on social networking sites and his support of the March 11 Great People’s Day campaign.
