CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEE TO DEFEND RIGHTS OF AGIL KHALIL NAMED

Yesterday the Freedom of Speech Defense Fund conducted a meeting.

During the meeting, the case of “Azadlig” Newspaper journalist Agil Khalil was discussed, and it was suggested the Parliamentariam Jamil Hasanli led the committee to defend Khalil’s rights. Hasanli agreed. During the same meeting a document was presented. In the document it is noted that European Convention of Human Rights articles 3 (Prohibition of Torture) and 10 (Freedom of Expression), Azerbaijan Criminal Procedural Code’s right to solve a criminal act, Constitution article 42 points 2 (Protection of a person’s dignity by the state) and 3 (Prohibition of torture and oppression) have been violated.
The Freedom of Speech Fund has determined that funds will be allocated to provide the journalist will legal defense, and the Najaf Najafov Fund was asked to continuously conduct a fund drive for this purpose.
The next hearing on this case is scheduled to take place on 14 April at 5 p.m.
This lawsuit stems from an information request sent by Adilov on 29 November 2007 to the State Students Admission Committee about how Royala Najafov (popular singer Roya) got accepted into Baku State University. According to Adilov this information request was never responded to. The plaintiff is seeking to have the court adopt a decision that State Students Admission Commission Chairperson Malayka Abbaszade must honestly and fully respond to the information request and for a decision to be adopted in accordance with Civil Procedural Code 265.1 that Abbaszade be held responsible for violating relevant legislation.
