GANIMAT ZAHID VISITED BY SPOUSE

On 8 March, Ayanda Mursaliyeva visited her husband, imprisoned Azadlig Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid, who is being treated in the Penitentiary Service’s Treatment Facility.

The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by A. Mursaliyeva.
Although Ganimat Zahid did not complain about prison conditions, his rheumatism pains remain and he continues his treatment.
“Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammerberg met with Ganimat Zahid within the framework of his visit to Azerbaijan last week and talked with him about issues in the sector of speech freedom and human rights in Azerbaijan,” said A.Mursaliyeva.
Ganimat Zahid, who has been recognized as a prisoner of conscience, was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years.
Azadlig newspaper has been published since 1989 and operates as daily newspaper.
