“GIZLAR UNIVERSITY” STUDENTS ATTACK “YENI MUSAVAT” NEWSPAPER’S EDITORIAL OFFICE

Yesterday, 4 March, Baku about 50 students and five teachers from “Gizlar University” attacked “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper’s editorial office. The newspaper’s assistant editor-in-chief Azer Aykhan told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the attack happened due to the articles about the university published in “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper.

“Gizlar University” Rector Agarahim Rahimov dismissed several fourth year students from the university. Parents of these students appealed to the president, education minister and other organs along with “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper. Articles in connection with this fact have been published in the newspaper.

A. Aykhan noted that they had to call police get the attacking students and teachers from away from the editorial office. “We have appealed to Education Minister Misir Mardanov regarding the attack,” said Aykhan. “We want the minister to receive a statement from the rector of the ‘Gizlar University’ due to this uncivil behavior.”
IRFS attempted to contact “Gizlar University” to learn their position on this fact; however our repeated calls went unanswered.
