GOVERNMENT RESPONDS TO QUERY FROM EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The query sent by the European Court of Human Rights to Azerbaijan’s government regarding the Editor-in-Chief "Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realniy Azerbayjan" Newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev has been responded to.

The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by the father of the editor-in-chief Emin Fatullayev. According to him, a copy of the government response to the query was sent to Eynulla Fatullayev’s lawyer Isakhan Ashurov. Isakhan Ashurov will write a response letter to ECHR after he is familiarized with the answers. Then the ECHR will issue a decision regarding Eynulla Fatullayev’s case.
Editor-in-Chief "Gundelik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbayjan" Newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev was sentenced to 2.5 years of imprisonment on 21 April 2007 for insulting honor and dignity.  Later he was convicted under articles 214.1 (threatening terror), 283.2.2 (incitement of ethnic/national, social or religious hatred abusing authority), and 213.2.2 (tax evasion) of the Criminal Code and was sentenced to a total 8.5 years of imprisonment on 30 October 2007.
