HEARING ON LAWSUIT AGAINST PRESS COUNCIL CONDUCTED

Today, June 19, in the Binegedi District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Allahveren Hasanov, a hearing was conducted on the lawsuit of “Korrupsiya va Jamiyyet” Journal’s Editor-in-Chief Mammad Ahmedoglu against the Press Council and the Council’s Deputy Chairman Vugar Rahimzade. Plaintiff Mammed Ahmedoglu and lawyer Abdulla Afendizade, as well as Vugar Rahimzade’s representative Rahim Huseynzade and Press Council Social Committee Chairman Mushfig Alesgerli participated in the hearing.

Speaking to the court, the plaintiff said that the Press Council does not have the authority to include “Korrupsiya va Jamiyyet” Journal in a list of “racketeering media” and declared that the Press Council be brought to responsibility for committing this illegal act.

Representatives for the defense said that on the basis of appeals to the Press Council about “Korrupsiya va Jamiyyet” Journal, the Council conducted an investigation and then adopted a decision to include the publication in the list of “racketeering media.”
The judge issued an order for the Press Council to present the approved version of the structures charter to court and scheduled the next hearing on this case for 29 June at 4 p.m.

“Korrupsiya va Jamiyyet” Journal was included on the list of ‘racketeering newspapers unveiled recently by Azerbaijan’s Press Council. M. Ahmedoglu says that his journal is not involved in racketeering. Therefore he has appealed to the Binagadi District Court asking the Press Council to publish a refutation and pay 250,000 AZN for moral damages.
