International NGOs Authorized to Submit Third Party Intervention in Khadija Ismayil’s ECtHR Case

“A group of international organizations including Article 19, International Media Support, PEN International, International Partnership for Human Rights and Committee to Protect Journalists have been authorized  by the European Court of Human Rights to intervene as a third party in the Court’s proceedings on journalist Khadija Ismayil’s case,” said the journalist’s lawyer, Fariz Namazli, on December 24.

“The Court has invited the organizations to make their written submissions regarding the case by 19 January 2016; these should address their particular interests in the matter. In their request, the organizations had sought permission to submit their written comments addressing the violations of Article 10 (freedom of expression) with regards to the individual case of the journalist, within the context of the violation of this right more broadly in Azerbaijan.”

Namazli added that the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression has already submitted his written comments to the European Court of Human Rights.
