On July 15, Nasimi district court considered the motion of the General Prosecutor’s Office for the extension of the detention of journalist Rauf Mirgadirov.
The court decided to prolong the journalist’s detention for another 4 months on the grounds that there was a need for additional investigative procedures to be carried out.
The journalist’s lawyer Elmar Suleymanov said they would appeal the decision.
Note that Mirkadirov, Ankara-based journalist for Azerbaijan’s Russian-language newspaper Zerkalo, was arrested on April 19 and charged with treason (espionage) under Article 274 of Azerbaijan’s criminal code. He is held in the custody of the Ministry of National Security.
