JOURNALISTS FILE APPEAL

“Nota” newspaper substitute editor-in-chief Sardar Alibeyli, journalists Faramaz Novruzoglu and Ramiz Tagiyev have filed an appeal against the verdict of the Nizami District Court which was adopted on the special format lawsuit of “Azadlig Harakatchilari” Union Chairman Tahmasib Novruzov.  The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by S.Alibeyli. 

On 22 July National Press Day, Baku city Nizami District Court (Judge Ziya Aliyev) found “Nota” newspaper substitute editor-in-chief Sardar Alibeyli and journalist Faramaz Novruzoglu guilty under articles 147 (libel) and 148 (insult) and sentenced them to three months imprisonment. If the Appellate Court upholds the decision of the lower court, both of the journalists will be imprisoned. Via the same verdict, another correspondent of the newspaper Ramiz Tagiyev was sentenced to six months conditional imprisonment (probation).
S.Alibeyli told IRFS that he has already filed an appeal against the decision of the Nizami District Court adopted on the special lawsuit of the Internal Army Commanders.
Internal Army Commander, General-Lieutenant Zakir Hasanov, Internal Army Deputy Commander Fakhraddin Samadov, Internal Army Financial Manager Namig Poladov and Internal Army Staff Department Head, Colonel Nasir Huseynov filed a lawsuit against Sardar Alibeyli in the special format under article 147.2 (libel in accusing someone of grave or especially grave crime) of the Criminal Code and the court issued a verdict to sentence the defendant to 7 months conditional imprisonment to pay 4% of his monthly salary to government.
