Appeal of “Yukselish Namine” Newspaper correspondent Elchin Hasanov, “Yeni Musavat” newspaper employee Afgan Mukhtarli and “Azadlig” newspaper employee Natig Adilov to the Sabail District Court in connection with their beating by police has been rejected.
The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by “Yukselish Namine” Newspaper correspondent Elchin Hasanov.
According to E.Hasanov, it is noted in the response letter signed by Judge Kamala Amirkhanova that the lawsuit was composed incorrectly, and the content of the appeal does not conform to the reality.
“Our aim is that police, who used pressure against us, should be brought to responsibility,” said Hasanov. “Therefore we will appeal to the Sabail District Court again. If the outcome is the same, we’ll appeal to the Appellate Court and then to other relevant instances.”
The Sabail District Prosecutor’s Office conducted an investigation in connection with the beating of the journalists by police and the Prosecutor’s Office recommended that they appeal to court.
A group of youth, who wanted a national mourning to be announced after the school shooting at the State Oil Academy on 30 April and protested the conduction of “Flower Holiday” were taken taken to Police Department on 10 May 2009. The journalists were in front of the Sabail District Police Department #39 to obtain information about the incident and were beaten by police.
