LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST “KORRUPSIYA VE JAMIYYAT” JOURNAL

A lawsuit has been filed in the Shaki District Court against “Korrupsiya ve Jamiyyat” Journal Editor-in-chief Mammad Ahmadoglu (Hamidov), “Serbest”Newspaper Editor-in-chief Telman Mammadov, and “Korrupsiya ve Jamiyyat” journal adviser Valeh Yusifli.

The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Mammad Ahmadoglu. According to Mammad Ahmadoglu, Shaki city resident Ahmadov Ahmad Abdulaziz oglu appealed to court claiming that his and his family’s honor and dignity were insulted.

A.Ahmadov demanded that a refutation be published in the newspaper, an apology made, that he reimbursed for moral damages by the defendants, and a special decision be issued against the defendants to be sent to the district prosecutor’s office.

“It is said in the lawsuit that V.Yusifli and I allegedly wrote an article about him in “Sarbast” newspaper. This is absolutely nonsense,” said M.Ahmadoglu, who then added that accepting the lawsuit for consideration by the judge is illegal and he therefore sent an objection to the court. M.Ahmadoglu added that the Press Council announced that “Korrupsiya ve Jamiyyat” journal is a racketeering press on the basis of this person’s appeal.

A preliminary hearing on this case will be conducted on 30 October 2009 at 5:00 p.m. in the Shaki District Court.
