Opposition Party Representative’s Complaint Dismissed

Surakhani District Court, chaired by Judge Elchin Agayev, held a hearing on the application filed by Mammad Ibrahim, advisor to the chairman of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP). Currently being held in Prison #16, Mammad Ibrahim for a transfer to an open prison, given that he has now served one-third of his sentence.

Mammad Ibrahim was arrested on 30 September 2015, based on a complaint made by Mikayil Guliyev, who had recently left the APFP. Ibrahim was assaulting of striking Guliyev. Mammad Ibrahim was charged under Article 221.1 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code. Subsequently, two more people, Oruj Valiyev and Mahammad Gurbanov, brought a complaint against Ibrahim, claiming that they too had been assaulted during the incident. The initial charge was amended to a more serious one under Article 221.2.2 of the Criminal Code. Ibrahim was sentenced to 3 years in prison by Narimanov District Court on 15 March 2016. On 13 May 2016, Baku Appeal Court rejected his appeal against the verdict.

Ibrahim’s lawyer Yalchin Imanov reported that the court had rejected their request, and added that they would appeal the decision.
