On July 21, President Ilham Aliyev issued an order on allocation of a lump-sum financial aid to newspapers published in Azerbaijan on the occasion of National Press day.

According to the order issued, one million manat has been allocated from President’s Reserve Fund envisaged in the 2016 state budget to the Fund of State Support for the Development of Mass Media in order to provide a one-time financial aid to newspapers published in Azerbaijan.

The order has reportedly been issued with the aim of strengthening the material-technical base of newspapers printed in the country.

Acting editor of Azadliq newspaper Rahim Hajiyev says the president’s order on assistance to newspapers does not cover them, because it has been now 3 years that Azadliq is deprived of government assistance.

On July 21, President Ilham Aliyev also signed another order on additional measures to continue the construction of the residential building for press workers on the occasion of National Press Day and allocated 3 million manat to the Fund of State Support for the Development of Mass Media in order to continue the construction of the residential building being built to improve the housing conditions of Azerbaijani press workers.

July 22 is marked annually as National Press Day in Azerbaijan. On this day in 1875, the first issue of the first independent Azerbaijani newspaper “Akinchi” (Ploughman) came off the press on the initiative of Azerbaijan’s prominent intellectual and well-known journalist Hasan bay Zardabi. This newspaper laid the foundation of the national press in Azerbaijan.
