PUBLIC UNION CHAIRMAN SUED FOR HIS OPINIONS DURING INTERVIEW

Today, 19 January, in the Yasamal District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Abbas Rzayev, a hearing was held on the lawsuit of Ganja City Education Department Head Mahal Aliyev against “21st Century Education Center” Public Union Chairman Etibar Aliyev under article 147.2 (slander accusing someone of committing a grave or especially grave crime).

E. Aliyev’s lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev spoke first and said that he objected to the judge and court. Then he presented his motion to the judge regarding this. He stated that Judge A. Rzayev worked as Misir Mardanov’s assistant when Maradanov was the head of Baku State University. The plaintiff’s representative objected to this, noting that objections can be made against the judge only when there is concrete and reliable evidence.  Judge Rzayev confirmed that he worked as Misir Mardanov’s assistant in 1997, and that he works at Baku State University at present. “However, this does not mean that I cannot chair hearings in connection with education,” said Rzayev.

Then the judge left for deliberation over this objection. Since the work day was over and 20 January is not a workday, the judge said that the decision on the motion will be announced on 21 January at 11:00 a.m.

This lawsuit stems from an interview with E. Aliyev that was published in “Azadlig” Newspaper on 24 September 2008. E. Aliyev talked about corruption and bribery within the Ganja City Education Department during the interview.
