Imprisoned “Azadlig” newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov has filed an appeal against the decision of the Narimanov District Court. Sakit’s defense lawyer Isakhan Ashurov told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. According to Ashurov, the appeal has been accepted for consideration. “Rizvan Jafarov will consider the case,” said Ashurov. “The preliminary hearing has been scheduled to take place on 29 January.”
S. Zahidov appealed to the Narimanov District Court to be freed early. However, Sakit’s lawsuit was not fulfilled during a hearing held under the chairmanship of the Narimanov District Judge Rovshana Valiyeva.
On 23 June 2006, Sakit Zahidov was arrested for possession of narcotics. He has five months left in his prison term.
