SEVERAL CHANNELS THAT ARE BROADCAST VIA CABLE TV CAN BE BANNED

National TV and Radio Council (NTRC) is preparing regulations on cable TVs. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by NTRC Assistant Chairperson Togrul Mammadov.

According to T.Mammadov, the regulations will be adopted during a meeting of the Council next week. “Although general mechanisms existed in connection with cable TVs, there were no normative documents,” said Mammadov. “The new regulations will regulate the work of cable TVs.”
NTRC Chairman N.Maharramli told press that they will not allow the broadcasting of TV channels that conduct special policy in connection with Azerbaijan.
“According to the existing legislation, cable network in Azerbaijan should co-ordinate its programs with the NTRC,” said Maharramli. “They inform us of any TV channel they want to air. They broadcast the channel after we give our consent.”
NTRC Assistant Chairperson Togrul Mammadov told IRFS that the ban on these TV channels should not be evaluated as censorship. “A ban can be imposed upon TV channels that have hostility against Azerbaijan or broadcast pornographic programs that are prohibited by Azerbaijan’s legislation.”
