SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS LOWER COURT’S DECISION ABOUT MUSHFIG HUSEYNOV

Today (29 July), under the chairmanship of Judge Muzaffar Agazadeh, the Supreme Court considered imprisoned “Bizim Yol” Newspaper correspondent Mushfig Huseynov’s cassation lawsuit.

According to Huseynov’s relative Javidan Huseynov told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the judge upheld the lower court’s decision. J.Huseynov said that an appeal on this case will now be sent to the European Court of Human Rights.

Recall that Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity.  However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008. IRFS believes that Huseynov was entrapped by government officials because of critical articles he was writing and considers him a wrongfully imprisoned journalist.
