The extraordinary tax audit against freelance journalist Aynur Elgunash has been suspended until August 15, journalist’s lawyer Elchin Sadigov told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS).

According to the lawyer, he has received a notification on the suspension of the audit.

“Aynur Elgunash has presented all documents related to on-site tax inspection to Baku Taxes Department under the Ministry of Taxes. Yet, the illegally launched extraordinary tax audit has not been – again illegally – completed to date. The reason is that, the investigating agency and the tax authority have requested documents from relevant state authorities and international donor organizations, which could serve as grounds to bring charges against the journalists. However, the latter have not responded to the requests of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Ministry of Taxes.”

Background: The tax audit was launched against Aynur Elgunash on October 5, 2015, as part of a criminal case launched against Meydan TV officials by Serious Crimes Investigation Department of Prosecutor General’s Office (SCID). Aynur Elgunash has also been banned from travelling abroad in connection with the criminal case #152006048 launched against Meydan TV officials under Articles 192.2.2, 213.2.2 and 308.2 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic and investigated by SCID.
