THERE’S NO TRUE FREEDOM WITHOUT FREE PRESS

“Without free press the public is not able to conduct an exchange of thoughts about national problems and priorities.

There’s no real freedom without a free press,” said the US ambassador to Azerbaijan Anne Derse, responding to Presidential Administration head Ramiz Mehdiyev’s comment that “the journalists won’t be pardoned.” R.Mehdiyev comment was a response to President Bush’s statement about Azerbaijan. Bush named Azerbaijan “a jailer of journalists.”
According to today’s edition of “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper, Derse said this in her speech on World Press Freedom Day. “Without a free press citizens won’t be able to receive necessary information for the accountability of the government. The lack of free press, especially in an oil-rich country, causes a high risk of corruption, and authority abuse cases and mistakes in management happen more,” she said.
