YENI AZERBAYJAN PARTY SENDS COMPLAINT ABOUT SAKIT ZAHIDOV TO PRESS COUNCIL

“Yeni Azerbayjan” Party (YAP) sent a complaint to the Press Council about “Azadlig” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov (Mirza Sakit).

Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. In the letter it is alleged that in Sakit Zahidov’s poem “Galib,” published in the 11 April 2008 edition of “Azadlig” Newspaper, there are phrases that insult the honor, dignity and business reputation of YAP’s chairman. According to Amashov, the Press Council’s secretariat currently has the letter and it will be reviewed in the next meeting of the Council’s Compliant Committee.

In connection with this, IRFS spoke to Sakit Zahidov’s wife Rena Zahidova and “Azadlig” Newspaper Director Azer Ahmedov.
“There is no insult in the poem that this complaint stems from, concrete criticism maybe,” said Zahidova. “If such insults are being spoken about, how is it possible that ‘Lider TV’ can insult people all day? They can’t differentiate between insult and criticism.”
A. Ahmedov’s position was similar to Zahidova’s. He said, “Taking into consideration what has been shown on TV in the last two weeks, at a minimum YAP has no moral right to talk about morals, insult, libel and ethics.” According to Ahmedov, there is no insult in the poem; it speaks about how YAP representatives live in luxury while simple people live like beggars.
