According to reporting by Radio Liberty, Vugar Gonagov, the executive director of the Guba-based Xəyal TV, and the station’s editor-in-chief Zaur Guliyev were arrested on March 14th.

This information has not been confirmed by Xeyal, which simply reported that though both Guliyev and Gonagov  were at the office in the morning, it has no information on their present whereabouts.


Poligon Information Agency correspondent and Civil Society Development Fund representative Jamil Mammadli is reported to have also been detained on the same day.


Arzu Abdullayeva, the chairman of Azerbaijani National Committee of  the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly, reported to IRFS that it is unknown whether the above-mentioned journalists have been charged.


Five media representatives are currently in custody under trumped-up charges: Avaz Zeynalli (the editor-in-chief of the Khural newspaper), Aydin Janiyev (correspondent of the Khural newspaper), Ramin Bayramov (the editor-in-chief of website), Anar Bayramli (Iran’s Sahar TV correspondent to Azerbaijan) and Ramin Dadashov (Sahar TV driver).
