APPEAL OF JOURNALISTS NOT FULFILLED

December 9th, 2009
Today, 9 December, in the Baku Appellate Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Huseyn Talibov, a hearing was held on the appeal against the decision of the Sabail District Court adopted on the lawsuit of “Yukselish namine” Newspaper correspondent Elchin Hasanov, “Yeni Musavat” Newspaper former employee Afgan Mukhtarli and “Azadlig” Newspaper employee Natig Adilov against the Sabail District procurator’s office.

The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by plaintiff Elchin Hasanov. He said that the appeal was not fulfilled.

The Sabail District procurator’s office conducted an investigation into the police pressure that the journalists were subject to, and the procurator’s office refused to begin a criminal case. Because of this, they appealed to the Sabail District Court to launch a criminal case against the police that exerted pressure and to consider the investigation of the procurator’s office unfounded.

The Sabail District Court issued a decision not to fulfill the lawsuit on 28 September, 2009.

The journalists were subjected to physical pressure in front of the Sabail District Police Office Police Department #39 on 10 May 2009. They were beaten by the police in front of the Police Department #39 while they were gathering information regarding the detention of a group of youth who protested against “Flower day” and not declaring of mourning regarding people who died during the armed attack at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy.
