Azadxeber website editor may face new charges

On September 20, azadxeber website editor-in-chief Nijat Aliyev was questioned by the investigator of the Department on Investigation of Grave Crimes under the Prosecutor General’s Office. The questioning took place in the Baku Investigative Prison, where Aliyev is currently being held. Aliyev has been questioned about the issues quite different from his original drug charges, his lawyer Anar Gasimli told the IRFS.

“There is a possibility that Nijat may face new charges. Two months have passed since the investigation of my client’s case has been entrusted to the Department on Investigation of Grave Crimes under the Prosecutor General’s Office. But it was the first questioning ever since. Nijat Aliyev’s 900 AZN and his car, seized at the time of his arrest, have not been returned yet. According to the Department on Investigation of Grave Crimes under the Prosecutor General’s Office, the case is still in Yasamal District Police Office. Neither the car has been documented; nor the money has been returned” said the lawyer, without going into details, as it is “investigation secret”.

On May 20th at 7:20pm, azadxeber website editor-in-chief Nijat Aliyev was detained in front of Killer menswear shop near Memar Ajami metro station and taken to Yasamal District Police Office #27. He was charged under Article 234.1 (Illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics/psychotropic substances) and sentenced to 2 months of pre-trial detention. NijatAliyev is currently being held in Kurdakhani investigative prison.
