Bank account of Azadliq newspaper frozen

An arrestment was served on the bank account of the Azadliq newspaper on November 5th, deputy editor-in-chief of the newspaper Rahim Hajiyev reported to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.

According to Hajiyev, Yasamal District Court Department for the Execution of the Judgments started the execution of the court’s judgment against the newspaper, issued in the lawsuit filed by Transport Minister Ziya Mammadov’s son Anar Mammadov.

Previously, on October 19th the Azadliq newspaper received a notification from the Yasamal District Department for the Execution of Court Judgments, which required the newspaper to pay off the court-ordered 4,000 AZN fine within 10 days.

Businessman Anar Mammadov appealed to the court citing humiliation of his honor and damage to his business reputation in the article titled "Kamaladdin Heydarov's bear eaten" (published in the Azadlig newspaper on July1, 2010 and in Yeni Musavat on July 2, 2010), and the article titled "Sheikh drives Anar Mammadov out of Dubai" (published in Yeni Musavat on September 14, 2010). Mammadov demanded 250,000AZN from each of the newspapers in compensation. On January 23, 2012 the Yasamal District Court partially granted the lawsuit by imposing a fine of 2000AZN on each newspaper.
