CASE OF “AZADLIG” NEWSPAPER EMPLOYEE SENT TO ECHR

The case on beating of “Azadlig” Newspaper employee Agil Khalil in “Zeytun bagi” (Olive Gardens) on 22 February 2008 has been sent to European Court of Human Rights.

Khalil’s defense lawyer Elchin Sadigov told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety.

“We appealed to the Nasimi District Court regarding about this issue. But our lawsuit was not fulfilled,” said Sadigov. “Later the Appellate Court upheld the decision not to fulfill our lawsuit. Therefore we have appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. In the appeal we noted that articles 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10 of European Human Rights Convention have been violated in this case. The issues related to Agil Khalil being subjected to torture by the Head Prosecutor’s Office and lack of security provisions have also been reflected in the appeal.”
