CHIEF EDITOR BROUGHT INTO CASE AS DEFENDENT

Today in the Nasimi District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Mammed Mammedov,  a hearing on “ANS Press” Publishing House’s lawsuit against “Azadlig” Fedailari” Newspaper was conducted.

For the plaintiffs, ANS’ lawyer Tofig Hajiyev, chief consultant Araz Tagiyev participated, while “Azadlig” Fedailari” Newspaper founder Tahmasib Novruzov and Chief Editor Vugar Gurdganli were present on behalf of the defense.

The hearing opened with Novruzov giving documents to the judge. Copies of the editorial office’s work registration book and a declaration on accepting the chief editor for work were introduced to the court. After the judge and lawyers reviewed the documents, Vugar Gurdganli was formally named a defendant in the case.

Novruzov then appealed to the judge and lawyers to resolve this case peacefully through the publication of a refutation, but this suggestion was rejected by the plaintiffs and the giving of testimony continued.

The next hearing on this case will take place on April 7 at 4 p.m.

Recall that, ANS filed a lawsuit against "Azadlig Fedaileri" Newspaper and correspondent Nebi Allahverdi, due to an article that was run in the 28 November-01 December 2007 edition of the newspaper. According to ANS' legal representation, the article, entitled "The pornography of ANS," with the subtitle "ANS is in everywhere-impoliteness," doesn't correspond to the truth, and involves false, humiliating and insulting information. ANS is seeking to have a refutation published, and also wants a 50,000 AZN fine instituted against Allahverdi and a 10,000 AZN fine instituted against "Azadlig Fedaileri."
