EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT CHARGED WITH LIBEL

The Baku Appeals Court heard the preliminary appeals hearing on the libel case brought by the Ministry of Education “Council for Textbook Evaluation” against educational consultant Alovsat Osmanli. 

Osmanli is being sued for libel after his series of articles on the problems in the Azerbaijani education system for Azadliq newspaper accused the Council for Textbook Evaluation of neglecting its duties when selecting textbook sets for the school curriculum, assigning advanced books to intermediate classes.
Osmanli and his lawyers were at the hearing, but Ministry of Education representatives did not show up. Osmanli’s lawyer filed a motion to require the prosecution’s attendance, which was passed by the judge. The hearing has been rescheduled for December 20th.
