On March 22, Ayanda Mursaliyeva, with her children, visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid in Prison #17. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by A. Mursaliyeva. Ganimat does not have any complaints about prison conditions or the attitude of the staff towards him, and he continues to read in English, Mursaliyeva said.
G. Zahid was surprised to hear that his brother Sakit Zahidov, whose name was included in the amnesty, has not been released yet. And he appraised his brother’s choice to refuse the amnesty, added Mursaliyeva. Ganimat noted that this amnesty act was not serious and its scope was not large, and prisoners who don’t have much left in their prison term should automatically be included in the amnesty and released immediately.
Mursaliyeva added that she is going to her husband on March 30 and tell him about the appointment of a special rapporteur by PACE on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
Ganimat Zahid was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years.
