Yesterday, 11 May, Ayanda Mursaliyeva visited her husband, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid in Prison #17.  The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by A. Mursaliyeva.

According to Mursaliyeva, Ganimat did not complain about his health or the prison conditions. The editor-in-chief is studying English constantly and therefore can read independently in English, added Mursaliyeva.
“G. Zahid wants to meet Press Council Chairman Aflatun Amashov to discuss issues related to the press and journalism,” said Mursaliyeva, adding that Zahid was surprised by the postponement of PACE special rapporteur on political prisoners Christopher Strausser’s trip to Azerbaijan. Strausser is now scheduled to come this fall.
Ganimat Zahid was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years. This charges widely understood to be spurious and Zahid is considered a political prisoner.
