GANIMAT ZAHIDOV VISITED BY HIS WIFE IN PRISON

Yesterday, January 12, Ayanda Murselaliyeva, the wife of imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Chief Editor Ganimat Zahid, visited her husband in Prison #17. Murselaliyeva told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety, “Ganimat’s condition is normal and he has no complaints related to his health. However there are problems with the heating system in Prison #17. As a result his place of confinement is cold.”

Zahid also told Zahid that he unaware of reports that provocation against his imprisoned brother, “Azadlg” Newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov, was being prepared. According to Murselaliyeva, this news greatly surprised the chief editor, who noted that his brother was doing nothing about the situation.

Murselaliyeva also noted that her husband remains depressed about the decision no to release him to participate in the 40th day of morning for his recently deceased father. Zahid’s father, Salim Zahidov, died on 1 December 2008, and the 40th day of mourning was observed on January 11. Although Zahid and his brother both released from prison temporarily for one week to participate in initial funeral ceremony for their father, a similar decision was not issued in connection with the 40th day of mourning.

Zahid is currently serving four years of imprisonment in Prison #17 after being convicted of hooliganism and intentional infliction of minor bodily harm.
