HEAD OF AZERBAIJAN’S COE REPRESENTATION CLAIMS COE PRESEIDENT DIDN’T MAKE COMMENTS ABOUT APPOINTING SPECIAL CO-RAPPORTEUR ON POLITICAL PRISONERS

July 12th, 2008
On 10 June a press conference on the results of the summer sessions of Milli Mejlis was conducted.

According to the Friday 11 July edition of “Zerkalo” Newspaper, the head of Azerbaijan’s representation in the Council of Europe Samad Seyidov claimed that Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) President Lluís Maria De Puig didn’t talk about the appointment of a special co-rapporteur for political prisoners during his recent visit to Baku.

“As you know, every newspaper writes however they want. One press organ says that Lluís Maria De Puig said this, another press organ writes something totally different, and the third another. But the truth is that PACE president didn’t talk about the appointment of a special co-rapporteur on political prisoners,” said Seyidov.

The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety notes that during a briefing for journalists on 2 June PACE President Lluis Maria de Puig did talk about the possibility of appointing a special co-rapporteur in September if the situation on human rights doesn’t improve in Azerbaijan.
