HEARING CONDUCTED ON PENITENTIARY SERVICE’S LAWSUIT AGAINST “ZERKALO” NEWSPAPER

August 22nd, 2008
Today (22 August) a hearing on the Justice Ministry Penitentiary Services' lawsuit against "Zerkalo" Newspaper and journalist Alyona Myaslikova took place in the Yasamal District Court under the chairmanship of Judge Ragib Gurbanov.

 A. Myaslikova told this to the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety.

"'Zerkalo'" Newspaper and I have been sued for the articles "Death Sentence", "Open Tuberculosis Zone", and "Gobustan Cemetery," Myaslikova said. "They want to fine me 50,000 AZN and they want 'Zerkalo' Newspaper to publish a refutation. This is the second month into the hearings.  To verify the reliability of the information in my 'Open Tuberculosis Zone' article, Judge Ragib Gurbanov issued a decision to conduct investigation in that zone. Gurbanov stated that a decision will be issued during the next hearing after the investigation is over. That heading has been scheduled for 8 September at 11 a.m.," said Myaslikova.
