HEARING HELD ON LAWSUIT OF IRFS CHAIRMAN AND EMPLOYEE AGAINST BSU

Today, 6 October, in the Yasamal District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Elchin Gurbanov, a hearing was conducted on the lawsuit of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety Chairman Emin Huseynov and employee Rasul Jafarov against the Baku State University (BSU).

Plaintiffs Rasul Jafarov, and the representative of the Baku State University Tofiq Sadigov on behalf of the defendant participated in the hearing.

BSU Assistant Rector on the Correspondence Teaching, and Second University Degree Mejnun Babayev, and the head teacher of the Law faculty Elshad Nasirov participated in the hearing as witnesses. Rasul Jafarov stressed that there were five wrong and confusing questions in the booklets and asked the witnesses these questions. Jafarov added that the sources of the questions and the persons who prepared them are unknown and this means the examination was not held fairly. The plaintiffs found the witnesses’ answers unsatisfactory, which is why the plaintiffs said that it is necessary to involve experts to investigate the questions.

Emin Huseynov filed a motion regarding the presentation of documents that listed the number of people who took the examination, the list of the students who were admitted to the university and the points they scored. Tofiq Sadigov did not fulfill the motion, and said that this would be an interference in the private work of people.

The judge scheduled the next hearing for 14 October at noon

On 8 July 2009 E.Huseynov and R.Jafarov took part in the internal test exam at BSU to get a second degree in law. Huseynov and Jafarov filed a joint lawsuit in court in connection with law violations they faced during the meeting of the Appeal Commission on 10 July.
