Human rights defender’s appeal rejected

October 15th, 2015

Sheki Court of Appeal upheld the Goychay Regional Court ruling on the human rights defender Taleh Khasmammadov on 13 October, reported his mother, Gulbuta Khasmammadova.

According to  Khasmammadova, the appeal hearing took less than 15 minutes. “Taleh is in serious condition. There’s a wound on his back. His headaches do not abate. The other day, doctors told him that he urgently needs surgery. My son has been arrested without having done anything wrong. I barely recognised Taleh when I saw him in court today. He is in critical condition. They have left his kids without a father. They have destroyed a family. Where should we go, and to whom should we turn so that justice is served?” said Khasmammadova.

Background: Taleh Khasmammadov was arrested in Goychay on 24 February. On 22 July, Goychay Regional Court sentenced him to three years in jail under Article 221.2 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code. Khasmammadov had previously spent time in jail.
