Yesterday (28 August) human rights defenders Novella Jafaroglu, Saadat Bananyarli and Chingiz Ganizade visited “Azadlig” newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov in Prison #14 and editor-in-chief of "Gundalik Azerbaijan" and "Realny Azerbaijan" newspapers Eynulla Fatullayev in Prison #12.
“We met with Sakit one-on-one, said Ganizade. “The purpose of our meeting was news disseminated concerning danger to his life. During our conversation with Sakit, it was determined that one of the prisoners occupies an aggressive position towards him as a result of disinformation passed by several people. This aggression was not only observed by one concrete action, but also by this prisoner’s gaze, his following, and there was some feeling that he could have injured him. However, prison leadership placed the prisoner in the penalty cell after sensation in the press. There’s no problem associated with Sakit’s security at the moment. Today or tomorrow the prisoner will be placed in a different prison. In a few days Sakit will be transferred to a different prison. Eynulla Fatullayev looked cheerful. During our conversation he told us that he appealed to the European Court of Human Rights and he is waiting for reply.”
Saadat Banayarli told IRFS that the situation of the two journalists is not bad.
Novella Jafaroglu told IRFS that both of the journalists are in good health.
Human rights defenders stated that they will visit the other two imprisoned journalists (Ganimat Zahidov and Mushfig Huseynov) next week.
