INDICTMENT FOR MAHAL ISMAYILOGLU READ

Today, 16 April, in the Absherron District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Shemseddin Abbasov, a hearing was held on the case under article 128 (intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221.3 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism with use of a weapon or weapon-like item) against "Yeni Musavat" columnist and former Editor-in-Chief of “Khalg” Newspaper Mahal Ismayiloglu.

M. Ismayiloglu, Ismayiloglu’s lawyers Elchin Sadigov and Alayif Hasanov, plaintiff Nasiba Safarova, Safarova’s lawyer Novruz Aliyev, and State Prosecutor Tofig Suleymanoglu.
During the hearing, the judge read the indictment act out. Then M. Ismayiloglu was given the floor to speak. Ismayiloglu denied the charges against him and said that these allegations have been cooked up because of Ismayiloglu’s journalism work. Then Ismayilgolu answered the questions of the judge, state prosecutor, and the plaintiff’s lawyer.
After this, N. Safarova spoke and said that Ismayiloglu injured her. While answering the questions of the lawyers, Safarova gave conflicting testimony. At this point the official business day ended and the judge scheduled the next hearing for 5 May 2009.
On 27 June 2008, M. Ismayiloglu was called to a police department on the basis of a lawsuit filed against him by his neighbor Vahid Imanov, who works in the Ministry of Interior. In the complaint it is alleged that the journalist beat his neighbor's servant for dumping trash in his yard. Therefore a criminal case on Article 221.3 of the Criminal Code (hooliganism with use of a weapon or weapon-like item) was instituted against M.Ismayiloglu.
