Today, April 17, “Azadliq” Newspaper Ganja Region correspondent Ershad Ibrahimov was arrested. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by the journalist’s lawyer Ramiz Abduallyev. According to Abdullayev, Ibrahimov was detained by employees from the operations/investigative department of Ganja City’s Kepez District Police Dpeartment.
The police approached Ibrahimov when the journalist was walking down the street. Ibrahimov was taken to the police department and a case was instituted against him on the basis of Article 310 of the Republic of Azerbaijan’s Administrative Code (intentionally not obeying police and/or soldiers). E. Ibrahimov was taken to the Nizami District Court in Ganja City. During a hearing held there, Ibrahimov told the court he suffers from an illness called “stenocardia.” Judge Zaki Babayev reviewed the case, found Ibrahimov guilty of violating Article 310 and sentenced the journalist to 10 days of imprisonment.
IRFS contacted Ganja City’s Kepez District Police Department. A person who would not introduce himself on the phone said that they had no information about this case.
