INTERNET CLUBS IN NAKHCHIVAN CONTINUE TO BE CLOSED BY LOCAL EXECUTIVE ORGANS

News about closure of internet clubs and restrictions on them in Nakhchivan persists in the local press.

"Radio Liberty" Nakhchivan regional correspondent Malahat Nasibova told the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety that internet clubs in Nakhchivan are truly closed. According to her, "useless" sites young people visit are reportedly the reason for the closure of the internet clubs. "However the owners don't agree with this idea. They think it is impossible to use "useless" sites after special programs (ed. firewalls) are downloaded in the computer," she said. She added that the closure of internet clubs is carried out by local authorities from the Executive Power in Nakhchivan. The owners who protest this action call for monitoring to be conducted.
IRFS contacted Nakhchivan regional correspondent of "Yeni Musavat" Newspaper Hakimeldostu Mehdiyev to clarify the issue. Mehdiyev confirmed that all the internet clubs in Nakhchivan and in Sharur district where he resides have been shutdown. "I can't say the reason for this, but the order was given by Vasif Talibov, the head of Nakhchivan’s Supreme Assembly," said he.
