INVESTIGATION BEING CARRIED OUT INTO BEATING OF EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF “AYAN” NEWSPAPER

September 18th, 2009
Today, 18 September, in the Press Center of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety, “Ayan” Newspaper Founder and Editor-in-chief Javid Alasgaroglu (Shiraliyev) conducted a press conference regarding physical pressure that he was subjected to several days ago.

J.Alasgaroglu spoke about the incident and said that several newspapers gave false information about the incident.
“Critical articles have been published about different officials in “Ayan” newspaper,” said Alasagaroglu. “One of the articles was about Internal Minister Ramil Usubov. Now some of my colleagues connect my beating with R.Usubov. Besides, Agabey Agayev, the Director of “Vilash” water depot in Masalli named after Heydar Aliyev, filed a lawsuit against the newspaper. However, I don’t know for sure who is behind the incident. Therefore, I don’t think it is right to convict anyone.”
J.Alasgaroglu added that police is investigating the case.
On 13 September, at around 2:30-3:00 a.m., “Ayan” Newspaper’s Founder and Editor-in-chief Javid Alasgaroglu (Shiraliyev) was beaten in front of his house at Nasimi District, micro-region 4, 28 Huseyn Seyidzade st., and sustained injuries. Alasgaroglu was placed in Semashko hospital.
