Journalist Hashimli’s trial comes to an end

Trial on the case of journalist Parviz Hashimli re-opened today, after last week’s adjournment.

While examining the evidence, the judge Novruz Karimov read the opinions of judicial experts. He then proceeded asking the accused if there were any criminal case documents relating to questioning and confrontation and inspection protocols that had not been reviewed.

Journalist’s lawyer Bahruz Bayramov requested screening of the video shot during preliminary investigation.

The court reviewed the video in question filmed during Parviz Hashimli’s confrontation with his alleged accomplice Tavakkul Gurbanov on 17 September 2013. The journalist claimed that the video was manipulated.

The judge announced completion of judicial investigation and the prosecutor requested time out to prepare his speech. The judge granted it and trial was adjourned until May 12.

Background: Bizim Yol newspaper journalist and moderator.az editor-in-chief Parviz Hashimli was detained on September 17, by employees of the Ministry of National Security. Main Investigation Department of MNS launched a case against him with three articles of the Azerbaijani Criminal Code: Article 206.3.2 (smuggling of firearms on preliminary arrangement by an organized group), 228.2.1 (illegal purchase, transfer, selling, storage, transportation and carrying of firearms, their accessories, supplies and explosives by an organized group) and 228.2.2 (the same acts committed repeatedly).
