Today, 19 January, the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety Nakhchivan Regional correspondents Hakimeldosu Mehdiyev, Elman Abbasov and Mehman Mehdiyev, and "Radio Liberty" and "Turan" Information Agency correspondent Malahat Nasibova appealed to the Chief Prosecutor of Azerbaijan Republic, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic’s Prosecutor and Sadarak Region Prosecutor’s Office in connection with pressure they faced in the Sadarak region’s Heydarabad village on 16 January 2009.
In the appeal the institution of a criminal case under article 50 of the Constitution of the Azerbaijan Republic, article 8 of Azerbaijan Republic Law “On Mass Media” and article 2 of law “On Obtaining Information” regarding the interference with their journalistic activity and pressure by Assistant Head of Executive Power Ashraf Gasimov, Head Education Department Oruj Habibov, Heydarabad School Director Nadir Guliyev, village resident Tagiyev Zakir Huseyn oglu is sought. It is also requested that law enforcement agencies conduct an objective investigation into this incident.
On 16 January, the journalists were subjected to attack while trying to conduct an investigation in connection with residents of Sadarak region’s Heydarabad village who were subjected to pressure because they filed a complaint against police. The journalists entered the yard of a house to check if I. Huseynov's wife Khanimzar Huseynova and son Elvin Huseynov were at home, however the door to the house was locked. At that time, a group of 20-25 people entered the yard and began to pressure the journalists. The journalists were prevented from carrying out their professional work. They have been subjected to moral and psychological pressure. Physical force was used against IRFS Nakhchivan regional correspondent H. Mehdiyev.
