The term given to the Azerbaijani government by the European Court of Human Rights in connection with imprisoned Editor-in-chief of “Gundalik Azerbaijan” and “Realniy Azerbaijan” newspapers Eynulla Fatulalyev’s case expired on 16 January 2009.
E. Fatullayev’s defense lawyer Isakhan Ashurov told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety that the Azerbaijani government asked the European Court of Human Rights for one more month.
“The Azerbaijani government was told by the European Court of Human Rights that the response letter should be submitted to ECHR by the end of January,” said Ashurov. “In addition, Azerbaijani government has to present one copy of the letter, which will be submitted to the court, to me.”
