LATE JOURNALIST ELMAR HUSEYNOV’S SPOUSE GRANTS FINANCIAL PORTION OF ELMAR’S PRIZE TO IMPRISONED JOURNALISTS

Rushaniya Huseynova, spouse of murdered journalist Elmar Huseynov requested the financial portion (800 AZN) of the Freedom of Expression Prize to be granted to the families of imprisoned journalists in Azerbaijan, Yeni Musavat reported on 1 October.

The late Huseynov was awarded the Freedom of Expression Prize at the Forum for Public Support to Freedom of Speech and Expression Freedom.  The decision was supported by representatives from the Freedom House, Article 19, Reporters without Borders, Media Diversity Institute, International Federation of Journalists and other international organizations.
The Journalists' Protection and Freedom of Speech Fund, funded by the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation, was founded by the New Generation Journalists’ Union, the Azerbaijani Journalist Union, Najaf Najafov Foundation, and the Azerbaijan Democratic Journalists League.
The Editor-in-chief of Monitor journal, Elmar Hsueynov was murdered in front of his apartment at about 8 pm on March 2, 2005. The criminal proceedings were initiated but the case remains unsolved.
