Lawyer Adil Ismayilov issues statement on arrest of Emin Milli’s brother-in-law

On July 30, lawyer Adil Ismayilov reported on the criminal case against Nazim Abagayov, the brother-in-law of Meydan TV Director Emin Milli.

“Nazim Agabayov was detained by officers of the Office for Combating Drugs of Baku City Main Police Department near the Bol Market shopping center on Mir Jalal Street in Binagady district, while he was driving to work. He was taken to Baku City Main Police Department where he was searched. Police also searched his car and allegedly found drugs. On the same day, a criminal case was opened under article 234.4.3 of Criminal Code of Azerbaijan Republic. The investigation was assigned to investigator Aflatun Salimov, and Agabayov was detained. On July 24, charges were brought against Agabayov under the same article, and Khatai District Court (under Judge Ibrahim Ibrahimli) sentenced him to four months of pre-trial detention. He has been sent to the Kurdakhani detention facility pending trial,” said the lawyer.

Adil Ismayilov also noted that he met with Nazim Agabayov on July 29, where Agabayov stated that he denies the charge. The appeal against the decision on pre-trial detention was considered and denied on July 29.

“Nazim Agabayov, his parents and his wife consider his arrest to be the result of a misunderstanding and hope that justice will be restored soon. To this end, they have appealed to the President and the heads of the law enforcement agencies,” said Ismayilov.

Many believe that Agabayov was targeted in relation to Milli’s high profile work criticism of the government.
