MINISTER WANTS TO LICENSE ONLINE TELEVISIONS

On 17 April, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies held a board meeting regarding the conclusions of the first term of 2010.

The issue of licensing of internet providers and online televisions was discussed in the event, according to Radio Liberty.
Minister Ali Abbasov touched upon the possibility of license restoration for local internet providers, and stressed that currently online televisions, and different commercial structures operating via the world wide web are being created. “Their operation should conform to law and they should receive a relevant license, or their operation will be ceased,” said Abbasov.
Media Rights Institute Head Rashid Hajili stated that there is no legal basis for granting licenses to Online TVs.  Noting that he does not see any grounds to make amendments to the legislation for this matter, R.Hajili stressed that technically it is impossible and this statement of the Minister is without grounds.
